Richard Eldridge was born at Blean, Kent, England. He was a labourer of Lower Hardres, Kent when he married Mary Ann Evans in that Parish on 17 October 1846 however his father's name was not recorded. Mary is shown as the daughter of George Evans, labourer. Richard was a agricultural labourer in 1851, a farm waggoner in 1861 and a farmer bailiff in 1871 and 1881. His children were all born at either or the twin villages of Upper Hardres and Lower Hardres, on the Roman road, Stone Street, south-west of the city of Canterbury. Richard died there in 1881 and his wife Mary died in Canterbury in 1903.
A descendent, Richard Thomas Eldridge, served in the Coldstream Guards between 1898 and 1910
and was awarded the King and Queens South Africa Medals and a Medal for Distinguished Conduct in the Field.
A month after completing his service with the Coldstream Guards he enlisting in the Territorial Forces
for 4 years service.
Three children of Richard's son Henry are known to have migrated to the U.S.A. Henry Marshall on the Majestic arriving New York on 26 Sep 1907 and Herbert Richard with his sister Margaret Mary on the Adriatic arriving New York 20 Feb 1908. All three were in California by 1910.
Descendents known to have migrated to Australia are as follows:
George Daniel was born in Bexley Heath England and his birth was registered at Dartford as George Daniel Watling. He is shown on the 1901 census as the son of Harry Eldridge a bootmaker and his wife Mary (nee Watling). He migrated to Australia on the Themistocles and is shown as age 17 when that ship arrived in Oct 1912 at VIC. He worked on a farm at Kempsey, NSW. Following the outbreak of WW1 he joind the Australian Infantry Forces and he showed his birth place as Bexley Heath and his next of kin as his father, Harry Eldridge. He married Lillian in England prior to his return to Australia. She was born at St Lukes London the daughter of Francis and Annie Austin.
George was a bootmaker and he and Lillian had two children, both born at Lakemba, NSW. Their first child, Joyce Lillian, died at Belmore on 5 Jul 1937 aged 16. Their second child, Iris Winifred, married at Belmore on 4 Apr 1942. George Daniel died at Concord Hospital NSW on 8 Apr 1964 and was cremated the following day at Rookwood NSW. Lillian Katherine Elizabeth died at the Tamworth Base Hospital on 12 Nov 1965 and she was buried at the West Tamworth NSW cemetery.
Ernest Eldridge and his mother Annie Eldridge, nee Adams, migrated to South Australia. On 31 May 1915 Ernest enlisted for service in WWI at Kreswick, South Australia and he showed his next of kin as his mother Annie Eldridge of 28 Park Street, Hackney SA. He embarked from Australia on 21 Sep 1915 and returned on the Mahia departing England on 4 Jun 1919. He was shown as a bachelor aged 26 son of George Eldridge on his marriage on 21 Oct 1919 at the Registry Office, Adelaide SA to Frances Whybrow. Annie died on 23 Nov 1923 at Mile End, SA and Ernest died on 23 Feb 1956 at St Peters, SA.
Albert Edward Eldridge migrated from London to Adelaide, joining his brother and mother, on the Benalla arriving enroute at Western Australia on 19 Apr 1926. The ship records show him as Mr A E Eldridge with Mrs M Eldridge and Miss Dorothy, Master Arthur, Miss Mary and Miss Georgina Eldridge. Albert's wife Minnie died on 13 Nov 1967 at Walkerville, SA and her death notices published in the Adelaide Advertiser read, in part, "beloved wife of Albert Edward, dearly beloved mother of Dorothy, Arthur, Mary and Joan, loved nana of 9 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Aged 80 years".
His son Arthur Albert married on 27 Nov 1937 at St Andrews Church, Walkerville, SA to Thelma Irene Juersen and when Arthur enlisted for WWII at Wayville South Australia on 29 Jun 1940 he showed his birth place as Thornton Heath, England.
Annie Eldridge migrated to New South Wales as she married Edward John Coveny on 5 Mar 1932 at St Martins Church, Kensington NSW. Her cousin George Daniel Eldridge had made an application on 30 Nov 1926 for her admision to Australia. The application shows Annie Eldridge was aged 21 born Kent England. George showed that he had been 14 years in Australia confirming he came in 1912 as a 17 year old.
