JOHN ELDRIDGE 1805-????

John Eldridge married Martha Carter on 25 Jul 1829 at Twyford, Hampshire, England. He was shown as a yeoman in the 1841 census, as a farmer in the 1851 census and as a sub-warden at Winchester College on the death of his son William and daughter Martha.

Four of their children migrated to Australia:

  1. William married Mary Coates and they emigrated to Victoria as assisted migrants on the Constant arriving Feb 1855. William was shown as age 20 and Mary 21. Mary died at Frankston VIC in 1908 and William, who was an engineer and farmer, died on 14 Aug 1913 at Buffalo VIC.
  2. Charles died in VIC on 26 Aug 1868 and was buried at Echuca.
  3. Martha Fuller migrated to VIC along with her two daughters Edith and Florence in 1887 on the Orient. Her husband Benjamin had died before 1881. Martha died on 24 Aug 1926 at Sandringham VIC.
  4. Edward married Hannah Maria Parr and they had a son Charles Edward in 1869. Edward then had a relationship with Clara Bramidge, a servant in his household in 1871. He later had a relationship with Julia Lucy Brandon who was a servant in the household of his wife Maria and their son Charles Edward in 1881. Edward and Julia with children Eleanor and Florence emigrated to New South Wales and their son Rupert Edward was born on 8 Sep 1891 at Leichhardt. Edward and Julia married on 7 May 1900 at St James Church of England Sydney. Julia was a spinster born at Battersea England the daughter of James Brandon, a blacksmith, and Mary Ann Munns. Charles Edward also migrated to Australia as he married on 14 Jul 1909 at St Michael and All Angels' Church, New Farm, Queensland. Edward died on 15 Sep 1923 and Julia on 27 June 1929, both at Auburn NSW.

Two of their grandchildren migrated to Canada:

  1. Harold Percival Eldridge traveled from Liverpool departing on 15 Dec 1911 on the Empress of Britain for Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Forces on 9 Jul 1915 and served in France with the R.C. Artillery in the First World War.
  2. Ada Vaughan Eldridge migrated on the Doric arriving at Quebec on 4 Oct 1925. She later returned to England where she died on 12 Feb 1963 in the Brighton area.
